Gethsemane

Then Jesus came with them to a plot of land called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples: "Stay here while I go over there to pray." (Mt. 26, 36)

Located at the bottom of Mount of Olives. The name comes from the Aramaic GAT SHEMANI, which means olive press. It is obvious that the place was full of olive trees and there was a press nearby. The building of at least two churches from the byzantine and crusader periods proves the importance of this holy place where the Lord entered into agony, sweating blood, before he was betrayed by Judas and arrested by the high priest soldiers.

An olive should be crushed before it gives us oil: an essential nutriment for our daily life. Jesus had to be crushed in order to give us life. You'll enter the Basilica of Gethsemane in deep reverence and silence and you'll knee at the rock where He started to feel the weight of sins of the entire world on his shoulders.
